Hetzner vs DigitalOcean: cloud VM costs and tradeoffs

The useful comparison starts with scope

Hetzner Cloud and DigitalOcean both appear in this catalog with hourly prices and monthly caps, but a useful comparison needs more than two entry prices. The collected currencies and tax evidence differ; region, CPU allocation, disk and included traffic can also change which offer fits your workload.

For an always-running VM, compare the monthly-cap column rather than multiplying both hourly rates by 730. For short-lived usage, inspect the hourly basis and the provider’s charging rules. The table preserves native EUR and USD instead of declaring that one number is a percentage cheaper than the other. A stale or missing exchange rate is not permission to assume parity.

Resources: what the catalog can and cannot tell you

Use the matched-memory rows to spot resource tradeoffs: how many vCPUs accompany the RAM, what CPU allocation is actually documented, and whether storage is described as local or network-attached. Where architecture or allocation is unknown, treat that as a question for the vendor, not as evidence that the platforms are equivalent.

A larger vCPU count does not establish better single-thread speed, sustained throughput or tail latency. This is a price-and-specification comparison, not a benchmark. Test the actual selected families with representative load before making a performance-sensitive migration. Traffic and region can outweigh the base-price difference

Hetzner’s collected traffic terms vary by region, while DigitalOcean’s monthly outbound allowance varies by size. Those distinctions are preserved in the provider and plan notes, not reduced to a single provider-wide “free bandwidth” number. A practical decision rule: choose the offers that satisfy your required region, software architecture, storage and connectivity first; compare their native bills with your own tax and conversion treatment second; benchmark the remaining candidates last.
